OXNARD, Calif. ? After all of these years, Rod Marinelli is hanging with the Cowboys again. Back when the defensive line coach was an offensive tackle at California Lutheran in the early-1970s, he got an up-close look at Tom Landry?s Cowboys.
At the time, Dallas held its training camp at the small private school, which is located about 20 miles down the road from Oxnard, in Thousand Oaks. That the Cowboys came right to Marinelli?s doorstep gave him the chance to see one of the NFL?s most high-profile organizations up close.
?When we were seniors at college, the captains would always have the chance to be the gofers with them, do odd jobs, hang out, whatever we did,? Marinelli recalled. ?My first experience with professional football was about class ? class ? and that?s always stayed with me ? class ? how they worked and how they did business?Details, organization, all the things you want to be exposed to as a player.?
Marinelli, who was a member of the Class of ?72 and majored in physical education, said the memories of that time are fond ones, particularly of Landry and the coaching staff.
?What jumped out at me was their class and that they were great teachers,? Marinelli said. ?They really taught well.?
