BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - "I got wounded in Iraq and basically I can't do the job that I performed in the military so I need some additional education and retraining for whatever I want to do in life".
Wesley Barrientos is making the transition from soldier to student after losing his legs to a roadside bomb while fighting in Iraq.
Barrientos said, "being active and doing something positive in our lives is the best thing we can do and no better thing to do than go back to school".
Thursday morning from 10a.m. till 2p.m. Bakersfield College is holding their first GI Bill workshop in the Student Services Building 151, located at 1801 Panorama Drive.
Barrientos, the school's veteran club president, says all reservists, active duty and veteran military are welcome to attend the free event.
Organizer's will help answer any questions about GI Bill eligibility, sign up for classes and much more.
All you need to bring is you DD214, any college transcripts you already have and an ID.
For Barrientos it's about more than improving himself, it's about paying it forward.
"I want to be an occupational therapist. The reason, because I want to help in hospitals. I was disabled in the war and I had great occupational therapists and physical therapists to help me get back into the shape that I'm in right now and I want to help other people and inspire other people", Barrientos said.
