UFC’s White Takes Jab at Rebney, Bellator CEO Responds

It goes without saying that Bellator 106 was a massive night for Eddie Alvarez, as not only did he avenge a 2011 loss to Michael Chandler, he did so in his first fight back from a nasty legal battle with the promotion. Of course, reclaiming the lightweight belt at the same time has got to be nice as well…

At first glance, the bout also appears to have been a godsend for Bellator, as the fight definitely lived up to the huge expectations it had coming in to the event (since their original scrap was also ridiculously entertaining). It also came after several fights last night, including two title bouts, which weren’t exactly barnburners.

Interestingly enough, ‘word’ of Alvarez’s win got back to UFC President Dana White (of course he didn’t watch the fight…). The UFC boss man took the opportunity to congratulate the fighter they attempted to sign not long ago, as well as take a shot at Bellator’s CEO on Twitter.

So, one could conclude that White’s referring to the fact that Alvarez has defeated the man Rebney called the best lightweight in MMA, and has recently signed to a long term deal. Since no one’s exactly sure of what Alvarez’s settlement with Bellator entails, all we know is that a rubber match with Chandler is likely, and then after that? Guess we’ll see. At any rate, when Rebney was told about White’s dig, the CEO responded (comments via MMA Fighting.com):

“You know what, I’ve kind of picked my spots where I thought it was necessary to respond,” said Rebney. “Some of his valuation comments were ridiculous given that his partner [FOX] paid us tens of millions of dollar for our rights in Latin America and some of the other things.”

“I don’t know what karma is,” Rebney said. “If karma is that we just put on the best mixed martial arts fight I’ve ever seen, that’s karma I’ll take big boatloads of.”

So, all the drama side, one thing’s for certain, Bellator has a massive fight to book here with Alvarez-Chandler III. Could it be the headliner for the promotion’s first PPV card?
