We went to see Sonic Flare play at Take 5 Lounge in Indira Nagar recently. It?s a bar and?restaurant?that also doubles as a live music venue.
First off, there are two Take 5?s in the same?neighbor?hood. We went to one near 10o feet road on 12th Main and were told that the band was playing at the ?main? location. We drove a few blocks through back roads to 3rd Main to the other location. It is situated above Cafe Coffee Day (on the 2nd floor) and this location doesn?t show up on Google Maps.
After we climbed two flights of stairs, we entered a cosy place decorated with black and white pictures of musicians. There is main area, where the band plays, with super comfy lounge chairs; where people can smoke indoors. I hated the smell and towards the end of the evening, it just became too much. There is a non-smoking section off the side, where you can?t see the band and it?s regular?restaurant?style seating.
We had a table reserved, but found out that it was never taken. Ended up sitting at the bar and ordered some food. As the band started playing, a huge centre table was vacated and I asked the guy who seemed to run things if we could sit there and share the table with someone. He nods, seats a party of 3 and ignores us. When I ask him what?s up, he tells us that the newly seated party will leave in 10 minutes and we can have the table then. Their table had two empty spots and the place was pretty packed (people were standing on the side and all), but I guess the sharing table concept hasn?t taken root here yet. We eventually got a table after another couple left.
So bad management aside, the place is alright. Ir appears to have a decent food?selection, though we only had the starters. The bar had a great beer menu and the bartender seemed to be an inventor of drinks of sorts (my mojito was made with dark rum, a first for me).
The?acoustics?were not the best, and sound was a?trifle?loud, but I guess you forget such things when the band plays. Sonic Flare is made up of members who all have regular day jobs. They played popular songs with a mix of pop to blues to rock. Their rendition of Zombie by Cranberries was a crowd?favorite?and I saw why it?s the only song they play on a regular basis (their set evolves constantly). The lead guitarist took off and it was the only song, I thought, that strayed a bit from the original and you got to see the actual band?s flavors in it.
All in all, we had a good evening. More comfy bar seats and no smoking inside would have made me up the rating, as reservation snafus happen to the best of us.
