Open Season on Salt: What the Science on Hypertension Really Shows

Shedding pounds may be a better way to promote cardiovascular health than avoiding the saltshaker

The latest news reports about salt are enough to make a parent ponder a household ban on pizza and cold cuts. A study published last week in Pediatrics found that children eat, on average, 3.4 grams of sodium daily?more than twice the amount recommended for adults by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). News outlets, including the Associated Press and USA Today, explained that, according to the study, the quarter of American kids who eat the most sodium are twice to three times as likely to develop high blood pressure as the quarter who eat the least. The take-home message from these stories is clear: kids need to cut down on salt or they will suffer serious health consequences.

It's a compelling argument. Problem is, it may be wrong.

The study that these articles reference, which was published by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), did not actually find a statistically significant association between salt intake and blood pressure in kids. And the doubling or tripling of risk described by some outlets isn't an accurate portrayal of the findings either. As lead author Quanhe Yang explained to Scientific American in an interview, high salt intake doubles the odds that kids have hypertension or pre-hypertension (and again, this doubling is not statistically significant), but odds and risk are two very different things. "I am not sure the best way to convert this odds ratio into a risk ratio," Yang says, but if he had to guess, the risk would probably be lower than the odds.

Yang's study does provide compelling insights. It shows that among obese or overweight children, increased salt intake is linked to higher blood pressure, an association that is statistically significant. Scientists have long known that obesity increases hypertension risk in adults and kids, but the CDC's study suggests that being overweight might also make kids more sensitive to salt's blood-pressure-boosting effect.

Still, the kids' blood pressure changes were not huge: The overweight children who ate the most sodium?an average of about 4.6 grams per day?had an average systolic blood pressure (the top number in the blood pressure ratio) of 112.8 millimeters of mercury (mmHg), whereas those who consumed the least?an average of 2.3 grams of sodium?had an average systolic pressure of 109 mmHg. (The two groups? average diastolic pressures, the bottom number in the ratio, were the same.) In other words, among overweight and obese kids, a doubling of sodium intake was associated with a 3 percent increase in systolic blood pressure. This difference may not be clinically significant for individuals, because "systolic blood pressure changes from minute to minute" by as much as 5 mmHg, says Michael Alderman, a professor emeritus at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and editor in chief of the American Journal of Hypertension.

An average systolic blood-pressure difference of 3 percent could, however, have consequences for overall public health. But Yang says that it's impossible to tell from his study whether eating more salt actually causes blood pressure to rise. "This is a cross-sectional study; we cannot say anything about causality," he explains. Although he and his colleagues tried to control for potentially confounding variables, it's possible that kids who eat more salt also have other habits that predispose them to high blood pressure. (For instance, research suggests that children who eat lots of salt also drink lots of soft drinks, which are associated with blood pressure increases, too.) Indeed, research doesn't always support the notion that salt causes high blood pressure: A large, multicenter study known as INTERSALT compared urinary sodium levels?an accurate indicator of prior sodium consumption?with hypertension in more than 10,000 people in 1988 and found no statistically significant association between them. In fact, the population that ate the most sodium had a lower median blood pressure than the population that ate the least.

House Tour Sourcelist: Sarah & Matt's Easy Modern Family Room ...

There seems to be so much more recycled content on AT these days.

There seems to be so much more recycled content on AT these days.

@ElleOh - that is some irony right there.

LOL... But yea, there's a fair amount of repackaged content.

I don't think the space looks modern. More contemporary than modern...

what about the butterfly? i've been searching for something similar. lots of butterfly prints have that tacky, faux-distressed Pier One kind of look to them.

Anyone got a good guess on what the paint color is?

honestly, the room looks a little precious and fussy to me. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable letting kids run through there.

Ha, so it is a repeat. Love the colors just the same.

Ha - didn't even notice that had happened!

The reason you couldn't find the same table in the same square shape is because that table is rectangular by all appearances.

To me, this is a pleasant but basically nondescript room with little that reflects the lives or personalities of its inhabitants. Nothing wrong with it and much that's right, but it strikes me as not particularly noteworthy. The sources--primarily from national brand names (stores and catalogs)--make that point.

Astronauts may play role in Mars robotic missions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? NASA's future plans to explore Mars may end up using astronauts as space messengers.

The new idea surfaced as a special team looking for a new Mars robotic exploration plan released a preliminary report Tuesday.

One of the option calls for a Martian robotic rover to collect rocks on the red planet. Later, astronauts in a newly built spaceship would be used to pick them up from a cosmic delivery point somewhere between Earth and Mars and return them home.

The report gives the space agency several options with no specific timing for future missions and no decision is expected until next year. The new plan is needed because budget cuts earlier this year killed two future robotic flights.

The space agency has so far explored Mars with orbiters and robots, like the rover Curiosity that landed last month. The ultimate goal has been to get a robot to collect rocks and Martian soil to send to Earth for more detailed scientific examination.

Separately, NASA is working on new missions for astronauts to explore away from Earth, with an ultimate goal of sending them to Mars sometime in the 2030s.

The NASA team proposed combining both dreams, getting astronauts involved in Martian exploration earlier. But they wouldn't exactly go to Mars itself. The astronauts would go somewhere between Mars and Earth and pick up the rocks left by a spacecraft that carried them off Mars.

That plan takes advantage of the new rocket and spaceship system for astronauts that should be ready in the next decade, said NASA associate administrator for sciences John Grunsfeld.

It also would lessen contamination worries about the Martian rocks. Scientists want to make sure that the Martian samples could not bring alien germs to Earth and that Earth organisms don't contaminate the Martian sample, Grunsfeld said.

And it would help the mission to land humans on Mars because it "looks a lot like sending a crew to Mars and returning them safely," Grunsfeld said.

The planning team looked at a few options for a Mars sample return mission:

?Send a bunch of spacecraft to Mars ? a rover, a launcher to return home, an orbiter ? in several launches.

?Package all those spacecraft into one or two launches that would save money but increase risk of failure.

?Send a bunch of small rovers to look around different spots of Mars to find the best samples and then design a system to collect and return those rocks.

Before that can happen, NASA still has to decide what robotic or orbiter mission it wants to send to Mars in 2018, if any. It's a time when Earth and the red planet will be close and save money on fuel costs. Grunsfeld said NASA only has about $800 million budgeted for that, which is not enough for a major rover.

Facebook suspends photo-tagging function in Europe

By Robert Daniel, MarketWatch

TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Facebook Inc. suspended for European users its automatic-photo-tagging feature in an effort to satisfy regulators who were concerned that the function, based on recognizing people?s faces, would harm privacy rights.

Wal-Mart to stop selling the Kindle

Simon Constable and George Stahl discuss Wal-Mart's decision to stop selling the Amazon Kindle, and Tom Fowler looks at the energy boom in the Gulf of Mexico. Photo: AP.

For Facebook, reports say, the suspension could impair its ability to profit from the data it collects about its user base, which estimates say is approaching 1 billion.

More broadly, The New York Times reported, the decision could affect how facial-recognition technology is used in public, for security and for marketing.

The Menlo Park, Calif., social-networking firm /quotes/zigman/9962609/quotes/nls/fb FB +1.20% ?agreed that by Oct. 15 it would delete for existing European users the data it has collected from its facial-recognition function, Ireland?s commissioner for data protection, Billy Hawkes, said in a Friday statement. The feature is already unavailable to new users.

?By doing so, [Facebook] is sending a clear signal of its wish to demonstrate its commitment to best practice in data-protection compliance,? Hawkes said in a statement.

Facebook?s non-U.S. operations are headquartered in Dublin.

/quotes/zigman/9962609/quotes/nls/fb FB 22.86, +0.27, +1.20%

Bloomberg Businessweek reported that other data-protection regulators within the European Union have been reviewing the feature as well.

A statement from a Facebook official, quoted in media reports, said the company intended to bring back the tagging function once it fully complied with EU rules. The function enables Facebook users to automatically see the names of people in photos they upload and tag, or identify, them.

The New York Times also reported that Facebook has been criticized by U.S. consumer-protection advocates over its face-recognition technology. It quoted Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.) as calling on the company to enable its U.S. users to choose to participate in its photographic database.

In mid-June, Facebook acquired Face.com, a Tel Aviv specialist in facial-recognition technology for photos. The Israeli business daily Globes reported via sources that the deal price was around $100 million.

Smaller car? Bigger insurance claim.

Even with the vast improvements in auto safety over the past few decades, smaller cars still lead to significantly more insurance payouts than their larger counterparts.

Even so, statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shows some stark differences in insurance loss data.

Some trends emerge from the data, one of which shows that personal injury, medical payment and bodily injury payouts are significantly higher for small cars than some other vehicle classes.

Among the worst vehicles for personal injury are the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and Toyota Yaris, while Chevrolet's Aveo scores particularly badly on medical payment loss. Moving up a class, the Nissan Versa also scores poorly, while the Mitsubishi Lancer is "substantially worse" than average in every insurance loss area--collision, property damage, comprehensive, plus the injury categories.

All the data compiled by the HLDI refers to 2009-2011 model year vehicles, and has been adjusted to reduce differences from non-vehicle factors such as operator age, calendar year, density, gender and other factors.

Generally, small, four-door cars rate substantially worse than any other vehicle class for injury claims, while expensive cars like sports cars and large SUVs have higher collision losses--since they cost more to fix.

Some cars do show lower than average insurance losses for their category, however--smart's tiny fortwo minicar is substantially better than average for collision damage claims, but no worse than average for medical payment losses.

The MINI range also scores average or better than average in most areas, while small sports cars like the Mazda MX-5 Miata also do well. Green favorite, Toyota's Prius, scores average in every category.

Speaking with The Detroit News, HLDI's Kim Hazelbaker explains some of the trends.

"Expensive cars cost more to fix, which is why they have such high collision losses... Meanwhile, cars marketed for their powerful engines tend to crash more often... partly explained by the type of drivers they attract and by the style of driving they lend themselves to."

As for small cars, the bare numbers show that you're still more likely to be injured in an accident--though you can mitigate it by picking the right model, it seems.

(AP) ? The San Francisco Giants pulled on gray NL West champion shirts and white caps, then took a victory lap around AT&T Park slapping high-fives with any fans they could reach.

The Giants have needed every face in their clubhouse and every ounce of support from their city. They lost All-Star closer Brian Wilson in April to season-ending elbow surgery, and top hitter Melky Cabrera to a 50-game drug suspension in August. They lost Pablo Sandoval to the disabled list twice, and second baseman Freddy Sanchez for the year months ago.

And, still, San Francisco won and won.

Madison Bumgarner pitched the Giants to their second division title in three years and newcomer Marco Scutaro had three hits and three RBIs in an 8-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.

"It's almost like we take it personally when people say we're going to kind of fade away," first baseman Brandon Belt said. "When somebody goes down, it seems the whole team just kind of picks it up and takes over. That's what happened the last few weeks, and that's why we're NL West champions right now."

The Giants captured their eighth divisional crown ? wrapping it up once again with a victory over the Padres in front of their home fans, just as they did on the season's final day in 2010 on the way to an improbable World Series championship.

A little earlier this time was nice, with 10 games to go.

"I'll take this one," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I like a margin of error."

Belt homered leading off the eighth to give the sellout crowd of 42,418 one more thing to stand and cheer about in a season full of such moments.

The real party began after Sergio Romo retired Mark Kotsay on a fly ball to center to end it. Fireworks shot off behind the main center-field scoreboard as the players rushed to the mound and began bouncing up and down.

"It's the first step," Sandoval said. "We're excited to get it done early. We've got it now. We're going to focus on finishing the season the right way."

Romo was among the first to grab a T-shirt, and as music blared and fans roared, the pitcher waved his high for everyone to see.

"It never gets old," general manager Brian Sabean said in the champagne-soaked clubhouse. "They're all different because the faces change and the dynamics change. It's a special group. The long and windy road this season's been, I don't know that we're known for any real star quality. I can't remember a team that attacked the schedule at the end."

Buster Posey and Hunter Pence each hit a sacrifice fly in the first and Bumgarner tacked on an RBI single in the second. Pence singled twice as the Giants won their season-high sixth straight game and moved 26 games above .500 (89-63), the club's best record since finishing the 2003 season 39 games over.

Scutaro singled in the first to match his career-best hitting streak of 12 games, also accomplished from April 9-21, 2004, while with Oakland. He is tied with Milwaukee's Norichika Aoki for longest active streak in the National League.

Scutaro's two-run single in the fourth chased rookie Andrew Werner (2-2). He singled in another run in the sixth.

Now, Bochy can rest his regulars and prepare his playoff rotation ? but don't count on it. San Francisco is still eying the best record in the National League if it can catch Washington and newly crowned NL Central champion Cincinnati.

The Reds helped make it possible for the Giants to clinch, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0 at home earlier in the day.

"It's one of those things you don't want to prolong it ? you want to get it done as soon as possible, celebrate and have a good time," Belt said.

These Giants are hardly the castoffs and misfits of the 2010 title team. Sabean again added some key pieces for the second half, getting Scutaro in a trade from Colorado on July 27 and acquiring Pence from the Phillies three days later.

San Francisco also played on, seemingly unfazed, after Cabrera's suspension Aug. 15 for a positive testosterone test. Just as it did in the season's first month when Wilson was lost to season-ending elbow surgery.

These Giants are still defined by their pitching.

The 23-year-old Bumgarner (16-10) struck out six and walked one in 5 2-3 innings to win his second straight following a four-start winless stretch in which he was 0-3. He took over the team lead for wins and also has the most victories by a Giants left-hander since Kirk Rueter won 16 games in 1998.

"That's pretty cool," Bumgarner said.

Bumgarner knows plenty about coming through in big games. He won Game 4 of the World Series at Texas two years ago as a rookie.

But he was done after surrendering a two-run homer to Yonder Alonso that cut San Francisco's lead to 5-3.

A mix-and-match bullpen that has been so reliable since Wilson went down took over from there. Romo, the fifth reliever of the night after Javier Lopez recorded the first out of the ninth, closed it out to set off a ballpark frenzy.

Sandoval received a standing ovation when he made an amazing catch in foul territory in the fourth on a popup by Alonso. The burly third baseman fell over the railing of a party suite close to the field, backhanding the ball while grabbing onto the rail with his right hand.

Once back in the dugout, Sandoval received a hug and pat on the back from Bumgarner.

"A deserving champion of winning our division," San Diego skipper Bud Black said in congratulating the Giants. "They played well, especially the second half of the season. They've had a great second half."

Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal was a late scratch as a precaution, a day after he left the game in the seventh inning after taking a foul ball off his mask. Black wanted to see how Grandal did in pregame baseball activities before starting him.

NOTES: Bumgarner is 31-3 when the Giants score at least three runs for him. He improved to 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA in four starts this season vs. the Padres. ... San Diego named Eric Stults (6-3) its starter for Sunday's series finale. The Giants changed their starter after the clincher to RHP Yusmeiro Petit. ... San Francisco leads the season series 10-4 with four meetings remaining.

Venus Lakshmi Shukra Mantra Invocation

This is a traditional, Puranic, mantra invocation to awaken the energies represented by the planet Venus--or Shukra, in the Vedic Astrological system. A Vedic astrologer would have you chant this planetary mantra to strengthen the good aspects of the force, and weaken any negative aspects preventing the blossoming of the planets full potential. The image of the male in front of the horse, and sitting in meditation, is Shukra, who represents the planet Venus; however, Goddess Lakshmi is the ...

Alternative Medicine For Hemorrhoids: What Works? | Find New ...

Article by Donald Urquhart

How can anyone looking for hemorrhoid relief tell the difference between an alternative medication that might actually help and a total waste of time, money, and suffering?

There are several different classifications of alternative medicine, each of which is unique. It is actually quite a mistake to lump them all in under one umbrella term like ?alternative medicine? but we have to call it all something. Taking the time to comprehend the various forms of alternative medicine today can yield some very productive treatment options.

The oldest and probably most efficacious form of alternative medicine is herbal treatment. Most of the prescription medications we use today have their roots in plants. In fact, plants are such a good source of new medications that there is an entire branch of pharmaceutical education and research devoted to it, called pharmocognosy. Herbal remedies effective for hemorrhoid relief are witch hazel cream, ointment or extract, aloe vera gel or cream, horse chestnut tea, butcher?s broom tea, and Japanese Pagoda Tree extract. Be aware that herbs are just another form of medication. Some of these, horse chestnut and butcher?s broom in particular, affect the entire circulatory system and may interact badly with your current health conditions or any current medication regime. In addition, find a reputable supplier for any herbal medications. Herbal supplements are not governed or tested under the same rules and supervision as medications, so checking for quality becomes much more important. Herbs grown under sub-standard conditions, such as next to a road or with polluted water, can actually do more harm as they carry detrimental chemicals into your body.

Acupuncture, surprisingly enough, has been approved by the World Health Organization for the treatment of several diseases, including pain relief. Several rigorously controlled studies have been performed on the pain-treatment capacity of acupuncture, particularly for such chronic conditions as migranes. While these tests have shown acupuncture to have a measureable effect on patients, no clinical trials have been performed to date specifically on acupuncture?s effectiveness regarding hemorrhoids. If you feel that the research that has been done is validation enough for acupuncture?s use, do find an acupuncturist accredited by the appropriate medical association for your country.

There is a branch of medicine called evolutionary medicine that seeks to understand and recreate the conditions that the human animal evolved for. Evolutionary medicine is firmly grounded in the findings of physical anthropologists who study the entire course of our evolution to date. One of the more valuable findings of evolutionary medicine for hemorrhoid patients is that we, as a species, did not evolve to sit on toilets but rather to squat for our toileting. Many hemorrhoid sufferers have found that raising their feet on a small stool while toileting relieves and may even banish their hemorrhoids. If this works for you, and you believe that fully squatting might be even more beneficial, toilets that allow you to take a full squatting position are available on the market today.

Holistic medicine is a reasonable approach for many people to solving a health condition. A holistic practitioner will take the whole person into account for healing purposes, instead of treating a human like a machine with parts to be fixed. However, any holistic practitioner worth your time should use the best that mainstream medicine has to offer in addition to any herbal medications or psychological aids he or she feels is necessary. If you?re going to pay for this treatment, do find a holistic practitioner who is also has their M.D., it will save you a lot in both foolishness and time.

Homeopathy has not been shown to have any appreciable effect, and in fact defies several laws of modern chemistry and physics. Homeopathic remedies are so diluted that no molecules of the supposedly therapeutic substance can reliably be found in any given dose of the remedy. Repeated scientific tests and clinical trials have been performed on homeopathy for many decades now, and homeopathy shows no benefit above the placebo effect.

In conclusion, Use this information, like any other, to find the best treatment options for you. If you are going to use one of the above alternative medicine options, remember that no alternative medicine is an appropriate substitute for sound, well researched medical advice. However, some forms of alternative medicine make wonderful complements to mainstream medicine, capable of shortening recovery times and improving overall quality of life.

Village's experiment with Chinese democracy sours

Staff / Reuters

Villagers gather outside the Wukan Communist Party offices to protest about land disputes in Wukan village in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong Friday.

By Reuters

WUKAN, China -- One of China's most celebrated experiments in grassroots democracy showed signs of faltering on Friday, as frustrations with elected officials in the southern fishing village of Wukan triggered a small and angry protest.

On the first anniversary of an uprising that gave birth to the experiment, more than 100 villagers rallied outside Wukan's Communist Party offices to express anger at what they saw as slow progress by the village's democratically elected governing committee to resolve local land disputes.

"We still haven't got our land back," shouted Liu Hancai, a retired 62-year-old party member, one of many villagers fighting to win back land that was seized by Wukan's previous administration and illegally sold for development.

PhotoBlog: Chinese villagers defy government in standoff over land rights

The small crowd, many on motorbikes, was kept under tight surveillance by plain-clothed officials fearful of any broader unrest breaking out. Police cars were patrolling the streets.

"There would be more people here, but many people are afraid of trouble and won't come out," Liu told Reuters.

A year ago, Wukan became a beacon of rights activism after the land seizures sparked unrest and led to the sacking of local party officials. That in turn led to village-wide elections for a more representative committee to help resolve the rows.

The Chinese village of Wukan in China's southern Guangdong Province had enough of local government corruption and threw out local party officials earlier this year. Now they are in a tense standoff with security forces who have formed a cordon around the town, cutting it off from the outside world.

Growing pains?
Friday's demonstration was far less heated than the protests that earned Wukan headlines around the world last year. But the small rally reveals how early optimism has soured for some.

Nevertheless, Wukan's elderly village chief and former protest leader, Lin Zuluan, who was voted into office on a landslide, stressed these grievances were natural teething problems with any fledgling democracy.

Democracy declined worldwide in 2011, watchdog says

He stressed his administration had made concrete strides including wresting back 625 acres and implementing clean, legal and open administrative practices including full disclosure of village finances and open tenders for projects.

"At this starting point for Wukan there will definitely exist some problems but it doesn't mean there hasn't been democracy or that we have made major mistakes," he said.

In March, expectations were high in this village, built near a sheltered harbor fringed by mountains, after Lin and his fellow elected leaders pledged to swiftly resolve the land issue.

Villagers defiant as government creates new narrative

Lin said complex land contracts and bureaucratic red-tape were hindering their work, with nearly 700 disputed hectares still unaccounted for.

Some critics say the village committee, which includes several young leaders of last year's protests, lacked administrative experience, failed to engage the public and allowed itself to be out-maneuvered by higher party authorities.

Shady deals
"They were people's heroes," said Chen Jinchao, a villager still trying to get back about 1.6 acres of farmland.

"But now we see them differently. We don't have any new hope. What's the point of electing them if they can't solve the (land) problem?" he added.

Some say recent discord has been partly sown by allies of the former disgraced village leader, Xue Chang, while higher officials in the Shanwei county seat of government remain tangled in shady deals involving hundreds of acres of Wukan land in a new economic development zone.

"If Shanwei's corrupt officials aren't cleaned out completely, it is very difficult for us to move forward," said Zhang Jiancheng, one of the young activists elected onto the village committee.

"Of every 100 things, we may do 50 of them. But people only complain about the 50 things we don't do ... The village committee has been trying to get the land back piece by piece. It's been a very painful process but we must follow legal procedures."

Journalist beatings erase Wukan optimism

With China about to choose new leaders, any further unrest at Wukan could impact Guangdong province's high-flying leader, Wang Yang, hailed as a reformer by some for defusing the Wukan standoff by acceding to key village demands and averting a potentially bloody crackdown.

Read more news from China on NBC's Behind The Wall

Some villagers have spoken of marching again and putting real pressure on county and provincial authorities.

"In the end, if they really force us to the very limits, it will be like a volcano exploding," said a senior villager who asked not to be named. "You can't control it."

Partisan Dems, GOP can only agree defense cuts bad

(AP) ? The only thing a bitterly partisan Congress can agree on as it heads for the exits is that looming defense cuts will have a devastating effect on the military.

No resolution emerged Thursday to avert $55 billion in cuts to a defense budget of roughly $600 billion, beginning Jan. 2. A House Armed Services hearing with the Pentagon comptroller and the services' vice chiefs devolved into finger-pointing between Republicans and Democrats.

Republicans blamed President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate. Democrats argued that the GOP must be willing to consider tax increases.

Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, summed up the frustration as one of the least productive and least popular Congresses in history breaks for the Nov. 6 election and an eight-week recess with a long list of work undone.

"Even though I didn't vote for this idiotic, stupid law, I accept responsibility as part of the Congress, and I think it's up to us to find the solution. However we do that, we better do it fast," he said.

As it turns out, the blunt-talking Reyes is one of 11 lawmakers who lost in a primary and will be leaving Congress.

The Republican-led committee dragged comptroller Robert Hale and the military leaders to Capitol Hill to describe the impact of the automatic, across-the-board cuts, which will occur if Congress fails to come up with a deficit-cutting plan that Obama can sign into law.

The $110 billion reductions to defense and domestic programs, combined with the expiration of Bush-era tax cuts at the end of the year, have been called the "fiscal cliff." Budget analysts warn that the combination could send the economy back into a recession.

The across-the-board cuts were devised as part of last summer's budget and debt deal between Obama and congressional Republicans. They were intended to drive a budget supercommittee ? evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans ? to strike a compromise. But the panel deadlocked, and only recriminations have emerged.

Hale echoed previous testimony from administration officials about the specific impact ? less training for warfighters heading to Afghanistan, fewer ships and aircraft and possible furloughs for the military's civilian employees.

"We would have fewer options to respond quickly to emerging crises," Hale warned. "Inevitably, this will require changes to the national security strategy that was put into effect last January and which we think remains the right one for the times."

And if the law changes in some way to ease the cuts? Hale dismissed that idea.

"We need to avoid this thing, not try to make it better. I'd like to offer you an analogy. If you're driving into a brick wall at 60 miles an hour, let's find a way to avoid the wall, not figure out a way to pick up the pieces after we hit it," the comptroller said.

The panel's chairman, Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., painted an even more dire picture.

"As far as I'm concerned, the Defense Department shuts down January 2," he said.

The expectation in Washington is that the election will break the logjam, and Congress and the administration will work out a solution in a jam-packed lame-duck session. The remarks from Republicans and Democrats suggest they have miles to go toward reaching any agreement.

Republicans who voted for the law implementing the cuts argued that the across-the-board reductions were Obama's idea. Several GOP members accused the president of being AWOL in the midst of a crisis.

"It's time for him to lead, follow or get the hell out of the way of this country," said Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga.

The panel's top Democrat, Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, said lawmakers need to be realistic about what must be done.

"Stop pretending that we can bang the table about how awful the deficit is and then shy away from any of the steps necessary to cut spending or raise revenue to deal with it," Smith said. "That's the fundamental denial that we have to deal with to prevent this problem from becoming very, very great come January."

Several Republicans and Democrats said it was a mistake for Congress to leave Washington without resolving an issue that the military leaders had made clear is undermining morale and would undercut national security.

And yet lawmakers are expected to head home by week's end.

"I think it's an interesting contradiction that this hearing has set forth chapter and verse about the urgency of this problem, and the response of this institution is to leave town for six weeks," said Rep. Rob Andrews, D-N.J.

The emoticon is 30 years old ;-)

Carnegie Mellon professor Scott E. Fahlman is shown in his home office next to a his invention ? the smiley face emoticon.

By Helen A.S. Popkin

Thirty years ago Wednesday, noted Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist Professor Scott Fahlman typed out the first sideways smiley face composed entirely of keyboard characters and posted it to the university bulletin board where ? much like the Internet today ?the flat text of faceless posts is often misunderstood.

"I propose the following character sequence for joke markers: :-) Read it sideways." he wrote in a post Fahlman recently described to the Independent UK as?"a little bit of silliness that I tossed into a discussion about physics." It quickly spread from universities to the rest of the world, eventually co-opted and evolving into graphic yellow blobs effusing tears or laughter, and tarted up with fashion accessories such as sunglasses and Santa hats.

Fahlman doesn't care for the evolution. "I think they are ugly, and they ruin the challenge of trying to come up with a clever way to express emotions using standard keyboard characters,"??he told the Independent. "But perhaps that's just because I invented the other kind."

Or perhaps not. Ubiquitous, much maligned and yet still needed, the emoticon is often much abused ? and not just in a graphics sense. Beyond the yellow?blobby bastardization, there's the unfortunate passive-aggressive misuse, in which a smiley face added to the end of a snarky email dares the recipient to take issue with the obvious tone. "Obviously you can't be mad at anything I've typed, because here's a smiley face!"

Yet, as long as we continue to bring all our issues and baggage to every bit of flat text sent from friend, lover or?boss, the unaffected use of the emoticon is still very much needed. There are countless creative variations since that sideways smiley face ? and still no need to resort to prefab yellow blobs. On this landmark birthday, lets return to the simple keyboard character composition and give emoticons the respect they deserve.

Update: As , this guy I know from Facebook, accurately clarifies, it's specifically the ASCII emoticon that is 30-years-old. "There have been typographic emoticons for a lot longer," he points out,?in a tone I read in the voice of Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons." Of course, Michael's typed missive might have been meant to be helpful, rather than rife with attitude. But since he didn't include an emoticon, there's really no way to know. Asian stocks rebound despite global uncertainty

(AP) ? Asian stock markets rebounded Friday, led by gains in technology and oil companies, despite uncertainty about the fragile global economy.

Crude rose above $93, clawing back some of its recent large fall and helping to boost energy stocks.

Strong orders for Apple's iPhone 5, which went on sale Friday starting in Asia, gave a general boost to sentiment in the technology sector.

The regional heavyweight, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index, gained 0.2 percent to 9,110.0 while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index added 0.1 percent to 2,026.69. Hong Kong, Seoul and Sydney also rose.

In Europe, France's CAC 40 rose 0.5 percent to 3,528.01 and Germany's DAX gained 0.3 percent to 7,409.49. Wall Street was set to rise with Dow futures up 0.4 percent and S&P 500 futures up 0.3 percent.

Asian gains helped to reverse some of the week's losses after Japanese data showed exports suffered from debt-crippled Europe's downturn and a Chinese index showed manufacturing contracted in September.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.7 percent to 20,734.94. Seoul's Kospi index added 0.6 percent to 2,002.37 and Sydney's ASX/S&P 200 rose 0.3 percent to 4,408.30. India's Sensex was up 2.1 percent 18,732.4.

In China, Asia's biggest oil and gas producer, PetroChina Ltd. and rival CNOOC Ltd. added 1.4 percent. China Mobile Ltd., the world's biggest phone carrier by subscribers, rose 2 percent.

U.S. markets ended mixed Thursday following disappointing economic reports that showed higher-than-expected unemployment and a contraction in manufacturing. The Standard & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq composite indices fell while the Dow Jones industrial average gained.

"It just seems like global markets are going through a bit of a consolidation phase at the moment," said IG markets strategist Stan Shamu in a report.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said a manufacturing index showed regional activity contracted in September for a fifth straight month. That was despite the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest effort last week to stimulate the economy.

Benchmark crude for October delivery was up 78 cents at $93.20 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

In currency markets, the dollar fell to 78.19 yen from Thursday's 78.21. The euro declined to $1.2968 from the previous day's close of $1.2975.
