5 Things that You Must Have to Keep Your Home Safe | Indian ...

As the old saying goes, home is where the heart is. Home is the place you live with your loved ones. How much are you concerned about safety measures in your home? It's strange to think that sometimes people are more concerned about keeping their PC safe from viruses and other threats with expensive security programs, but pay less attention to ensure the safety of their home! Preparation to face an emergency situation takes careful planning and installation of appropriate equipment. Being prepared in the event of a fire is especially important: according to UK National Statistics, 388 fire-related deaths were reported in 2010-11 and the majority of the deaths occurred in house fires. During the same period, the number of house fires in the UK was more than 45,000.

Use of protective measures and alarm systems could significantly decrease the number of casualties.

Smoke Alarm

A smoke alarm is an essential tool to fight against fire in any home. Among the total 306 house fire casualties in the UK in 2010-11, 37% of deaths occurred in homes where no smoke alarm was installed. In another 25% of cases, the smoke alarm did not function properly. There are two common types of smoke alarms - ionization and photoelectric. These two types function in different ways as they have their own way of identifying smoke particles. To be absolutely sure that the smoke alarm will give warning for any kind of fire incident, it is advisable to install both types of smoke alarms in your home.

Carbon Monoxide Alarm

A carbon monoxide alarm is an important part of home safety equipment that is often overlooked. Carbon monoxide is known for its toxicity. Carbon monoxide alarms measure the amount of carbon monoxide in the air inside the house so can detect a potentially fatal leak. Depending on the level of gas and duration of detection, the alarm can be triggered and will alert you to danger.

Emergency Evacuation Plan

You must prepare a plan for an emergency situation. When you and your family sketch a step by step guide with detailed descriptions and practice the drill, you will know exactly what to do in the event of an emergency. Evacuation plans will ensure that you are prepared for fire and other emergencies.

Fire Extinguisher

There are different types of fire extinguishers for fighting electrical fires, paper fires, liquid fires and many more. They come in several different classes, with the most common being the ABC Class. Ensure that you have fire fighting equipment in your home: it is better to use a multiple-class extinguisher which can be used for different types of fires.

Fire Escape Ladder

In the event of a fire, the main exit of your home could become inaccessible. That's why it is important to have a second way to exit that can be accessible from any room of your house. During an emergency, your family members will be able to save themselves using the escape ladder. However, if you are on the ground floor, windows should be used as exit point. But in the case of multi-storey houses, having a fire escape ladder is a much better guarantee of safety.

Installing the smoking alarm and?carbon monoxide alarm?is a great start, but you also need to make sure that the equipment is working properly by checking them regularly. The safety of you and your family should always be paramount; there's no harm if you are prepared beforehand for a fire as it will increase the chance of the survival of you and your family.
