NEW DELHI (AP) ? Police said a man on trial for the gang rape and fatal beating of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus committed suicide in an Indian jail Monday, but his lawyer and family allege he was killed.
Ram Singh, who was accused of driving the bus on which the 23-year-old student was raped by a group of six men in December, was under suicide watch at New Delhi's Tihar Jail when he hanged himself with his own clothes at about 5:30 a.m., police officials said. His death is raising further questions about a criminal justice system already being criticized for failing to protect the nation's women.
Singh and his four fellow defendants were facing the death penalty if convicted of the attack, which horrified Indians and set off national protests. A sixth accused is being tried and jailed separately because he is a juvenile.
India's deputy home minister, R. P. N. Singh, said an inquiry had been ordered into the suicide, according to the Press Trust of India.
Ram Singh's family and lawyer alleged foul play in his death.
"There were no circumstances which could have led to Ram Singh committing suicide. There was no mental stress. He was very happy," his lawyer V.K. Anand said. Lawyers for the defendants had previously accused police of beating confessions out of the men.
Ram Singh's father, Mangelal Singh, said his son had been raped in prison by other inmates and had been repeatedly threatened by inmates and guards. Nevertheless, he said he visited his son four days ago and the man appeared fine and gave no hint of the despair that could drive him to take his own life.
Ram Singh, 34, also had a badly injured hand and would have been unable to orchestrate a suicide, his father said, speaking from outside his small home in a New Delhi slum.
"Somebody has killed him," he said, insisting he would push for a top level investigation into the death.
Mangelal Singh said he feared for the safety of another son who is also on trial in the rape case.
The defendants were being housed in separate buildings on the jail grounds and were all under suicide watch, a jail official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
Indian jails have a reputation for overcrowding, poor management and brutal treatment of inmates.
The rape victim and a male friend were attacked after boarding the bus Dec. 16 as they tried to return home after watching a movie, police say. The six men, the only occupants of the private bus, beat the man with a metal bar, raped the woman and used the bar to inflict massive internal injuries to her, police say. The victims were dumped naked on the roadside, and the woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.
The brutal attack set off nationwide protests about India's treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.
Singh's death comes as the trial was deep underway, with another hearing scheduled for Monday. The four surviving defendants were produced in court, but left after a short time because their lawyers were not there amid an attorney's strike.
K.T. S. Tulsi, a former top lawyer in the office of the solicitor general of India, said the suicide should have no impact on the trail, which is being held in a closed courtroom under a gag order that prevents news organization from publishing details of the proceedings.
He said the death highlighted how important it was for society not to demonize people who have been accused of crimes but not yet been convicted.
"It is so unfortunate that the media goes on to presume that they are guilty and goes on to condemn them and demonize them to an extent that it makes the life of these people not worth living," he said.
In 2011, 68 inmates in India died from suicide and another eight were killed by fellow inmates, according to India's National Crime Records Bureau.
Tihar Jail is badly overcrowded with nearly twice as many prisoners as it was designed to hold. Jail authorities have been working to soften its reputation in part by selling TJ's cookies baked by the inmates to the public.

Yankees will call Chipper
Chipper Jones is retired. He has said so unequivocally and repeatedly, as recently as two weeks ago. Still, when you?re Brian Cashman and you?ve lost your third baseman, first baseman and one of your corner outfielders I suppose you?re allowed to be hopeful about things:
Those first two tweets sounded like Cashman ? who was speaking to reporters about his Derek Lee inquiries ? just messing around. In the same vein as ?sure, I?d love it if we could sign Johnny Mize.? ?But the last one suggesting that Cashman is serious was somewhat surprising.
It?s not going to happen. Chipper Jones is not, by his own admission, at all interested in playing baseball anymore. Even if he was, there is nothing in his entire history or temperament which suggests he?d go back on his decision to retire, let alone that he?d do so for the Yankees or any other team besides the Braves.
UPDATE: It seems Cashman has reached out to Scott Rolen too, but there isn?t much traction there. ?No word on when Kelly Gruber will get his call.
But when you?re desperate you?re desperate. And if I was Brian Cashman I?d want Chipper Jones too.

Muse: Uprising with lyrics
?
You all took at least one US Government class. You learned US federal government is limited in power by our Constitution. ?Limited government? prevents unlimited or dictatorial power.
?
Given our unalienable rights and Constitution, We the People have a choice: either honor and uphold our freedoms under law, or surrender to ?emperor has no clothes? obvious criminals. Many Americans have Oaths to ?support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.?
?
Are you ready for victory now? Or do you choose to support and defend crimes that annually kill millions, harm billions, and loot trillions of our dollars while destroying our honor and damning our children to tyranny?
?
You are capable of verifying the simplest of facts, and will quickly recognize and confirm the following US acts are obvious crimes:
?
- US armed attacks, invasions, and occupations of foreign lands are unlawful Wars of Aggression. Two treaties, the Kellogg-Briand Pact and UN Charter, make armed attacks on another nation unlawful unless in response to armed attack by that nation?s government. It?s icing on the legal cake that all ?reasons? given for war to Americans, our military, and the world are now disclosed by our own official documents as known to be false as they were told. Moreover, such US wars have killed 20-30million since WW2.
?
- Fraud is the crime of misrepresentation that causes harm. The US bankster economy uses fraud to transfer trillions annually from We the People to them. This criminal ?1%? represent our ?debt-supply? as a ?money supply,? represent bank debt that they made out of nothing as ?loans,? and represent escalating government debts as having no solutions except our austerity rather than presenting obvious solutions. This fraud costs Americans increasing work (if they can get work), increasing debt, inflation, deprivation of public services, and a transfer of wealth to a criminal-colluding 1% that hide ~$20 to $30 trillion in protected tax havens. About one million children die from preventable poverty every month from ?developed? nations? reneged promises for annual investment equal to one-half of one percent of this tax-free wealth for about ten years. Ending poverty reduces population growth in all historical cases, and according to the CIA is the best way to end terrorism.
?
?
You therefore recognize that US Presidents, leadership of both parties in Congress, and corporate media all act and lie for the worst crimes imaginable for a nation to commit. They do so relentlessly and increasingly. In case you consider state-level ?leadership? of our Left and Right arms of fascism any better, they lie and hoard literal billions and trillions in surplus taxpayer accounts while demanding our austerity. This is what the CAFR scam is about.
?
Finally, you rightfully conclude:
?
- The lawful response to these crimes is immediate arrests, not mere consideration of impeachment committee consideration or media banter about proper leadership. For four years I?ve offered Truth and Reconciliation for these criminals that is still open; my colleagues and I receive silence and escalated criminality that kill millions, harm billions, and loot trillions.
?
- The rule of law is meant for all to understand, and that if we can master rules in sports we MUST MASTER AND ENFORCE rules that millions and billions of human beings rely upon people of good hearts and minds to uphold.
?
?
We will be victorious, as Muse?s Uprising lyrics artistically states, because We the People choose justice over War Crimes, prosperity over imposed poverty, and unleashing the human spirit discover human life after our control is ended.
?
The only missing pieces are critical mass recognition of the US 99% of the vicious crimes of our 1% ?leadership,? and our exercise of lawful rights to end ?emperor has no clothes? obvious crimes.
?
Act as your heart and mind best inform you.
?
You are ready for victory.
?
Be proud of who you are.

Comparing iPad podcast apps at a glance

Earlier this week, I compared the player screens of 6 popular iPhone podcast apps, and since fair-is-fair, now it's the iPad's turn. Like with the 18 iPad weather apps and 9 iPad Twitter apps, not all iPhone podcasting apps have versions or interfaces for the iPad. However, in this case we're 5 for six. Not bad.
The players seem split on how they handle the larger iPad screen real-estate. Some just get bigger. Others go multi-colum. The bigger ones look better. The multi-column ones arguably function faster. And, as usual, it's interesting to see how the same basic control needs get expressed differently in the different apps, and how they range from simplicity to complexity.
Here, in order, from top left to bottom right, are:

There are other factors to consider when comparing podcast apps, of course. How good and quick the experience is for finding, subscribing, and playing podcasts, whether there's sync for multiple devices, how well show notes are handled, and more.
For now, look over the designs above and let me know what you think. Which podcast apps do you use, and are they the same ones that appeal to you most in the comparison above? Any of the players attractive enough they encourage you to give them a shot?
