This deserves a B because I am consciously working on it, but far from perfect. When things start to go awry (in that every-day sort of way, when nothing is really wrong, just whinier, jumpier, and grosser than I'd like), I remind myself to "just have fun".? Distraction is a good technique for dealing with kids & adults alike (just ask a certain political party....).? And saying "Yes" more often isn't going to turn my kids into deviants.? I mean, doesn't music, crackers, or a sticker make?everyone's life a little brighter?
My enemy in this is also my dearest ally---my to-do list. There are definitely times (weekday evenings specifically) where I shove aside fun to plow through my chores. I miss my boys all day yet when we all get home I half-ignore them as I rush here & there making lunches, washing bottles, and starting laundry. Sure, all of this can be done after they go to bed but that end-of-the-day alone time is so so precious to me that I try to maximize it by completing the must-dos earlier in the evening...at the expense of giving my full attention to my children.
So I'm going to add to this intention---my motherhood goals will include having fun and focus. And the to-do list gets put on hold from 6-8 pm.

Venezuelans threaten mass lawsuits for faulty breast implants
CARACAS (Reuters) - Some 2,000 Venezuelan women are threatening to sue doctors, private clinics and distributors for faulty PIP breast implants if they do not get free replacements in one of the world's hottest markets for plastic surgery.
The image-conscious South American country was disproportionately hit by defective breast?implants sold by French manufacturer Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) and filled with dangerous, industrial grade silicone.
Local consumer protection group ANAUCO says Venezuela - famed for beauty queens with six Miss Universe titles and six Miss World crowns - imported around 30,000 pairs of PIP implants over the past decade. PIP sold 300,000?implants worldwide.
ANAUCO plans to meet in the coming days with representatives of clinics, surgeons and the company which imported the implants to negotiate removal and replacement surgeries free of charge.
"If the doctors lend their hands, the clinics their operating rooms and (the importer) new prosthetics, we will have practically everything we need for these women to get surgery without cost," ANAUCO's president Roberto Leon said.
"If negotiation doesn't work, in the next 30 days or so we will be suing all the actors involved so that everyone responsible pays their share."
He said around 2,000 women are interested in filing individual claims after an attempt to bring a class action suit stalled earlier this year after a previous legal team missed hearings. The numbers could not be independently verified.
Leon is also helping between 200 and 300 women join ongoing legal cases in France against PIP's jailed founder Jean-Claude Mas, who faces both civil and criminal charges.

PIP went bankrupt, but Leon said?the lawsuits the Venezuelan women want to join in France are also?targeting German certification company?TUV?Rheinland for compensation. TUV Rheinland says its remit was to look into the manufacturing process, but not the content of the silicone, and that it was also misled by PIP.
Implants made by PIP, at one time the third biggest global supplier, were ordered off the market in March 2010 after an investigation found many contained gel approved for use in products from computers to cookware, but not medical devices.
French authorities then sparked a global panic late last year by saying the implants should be surgically removed due to an unusually high rupture rate.
CHEAP OPERATIONS
Pedro Del Medico, the director of Venezuela's association of private medical clinics, said his group was willing to negotiate if decisions are made based on scientific information since not all health experts say the implants are dangerous.
Some governments like Britain and Brazil recommended women check their implants, but did not necessarily advise removal.
Galaxia Medica, which imported PIP products into Venezuela, said it was open to dialogue but that it was not to blame.
"We want to help contribute to a solution to this problem but from a legal perspective we don't think we have any responsibility in what happened," said Ruben Bretto, a spokesman for the company which sold the implants directly to doctors and to a pharmacy chain. "We also feel tricked, because we acquired a product that was well known internationally and certified."
If there is no deal on replacing the implants, Leon said ANAUCO will sue doctors and clinics for psychological and economic damages. He cited as precedent a ruling last month by a Spanish court?that fined a surgeon and a private clinic 7,500 Euros for giving women PIP implants without?sufficient information.
In Venezuela, he said each case will carry a different price tag depending on the circumstances. But the surgeons, clinics and the distributor all say they are also innocent victims since they used products internationally certified as safe.
Surgeons in Italy are suing both PIP and?TUV Rheinland, claiming they are?injured parties as well.
Lawsuits against local doctors and clinics and local health regulators that allowed the products to be imported could follow in other parts of Latin America. Led by Venezuela and Colombia, the region became PIP's top market, generating two-thirds of the company's sales.
In Argentina, some women have already been able to settle out of court to have the operating doctor's insurance pay for replacements.
Cut-rate plastic surgery is widespread in Venezuela, where many women from all economic classes take out loans to nip, tuck or boost different body parts in procedures that are sometimes even given away as raffle prizes.
Joli Canizales, a 32-year-old house cleaner, spent a big chunk of her salary on a breast augmentation in a back-room clinic seven years ago. The operation came at a discount, but was performed by an unqualified physician's assistant.
"He wasn't a doctor, he was more of a butcher," said Canizales, who is now experiencing daily pain after her PIP implants burst and leaked silicone into her body. "I am not wealthy but I always had this dream, to feel more beautiful. Now it's just a nightmare."
Unemployed after floods last year left her homeless, Canizales says she cannot afford another operation. A group organizing the victims singled out her and some 50 other women as the most severe cases and have asked lawmakers to set aside funds for their operations.
After President Hugo Chavez railed against "capitalist advertising" for spurring Venezuela's plastic surgery craze, heath ministry officials offered to remove the PIP implants for free in the socialist government's public hospitals.
Canizales says she tried that route, but the hospital turned her away since her case was not an emergency.
The public health system is ill-equipped to deal with the scale of the problem, said Nakary Fleming, a 32-year-old lawyer, who is helping to organize the affected women. "In many places they don't even have gauze."
WOMEN WANT REPLACEMENTS
Fleming said another issue is the government's refusal to put in new implants. "No one wants to be left with nothing. Their breasts are deformed, their skin is stretched out, they look like old women ... That affects social life, self-esteem."
Many women who can afford it are flocking to private doctors who can give them new, safer replacement implants.
Plastic surgeon Daniel Slobodianik has been swamped with requests after he announced via Facebook and Twitter that he would waive his operating fees to replace PIP implants.
"I am booked through August, and that's doing at least two removals every day," Slobodianik said during a brief interview between a steady stream of women visiting his small office at a shopping mall in an upscale Caracas district.
He says at least 40 percent of his patients have damaged implants. "I've never seen so many ruptures. Some of them are completely pulverized," he said, showing a photo on his iPhone of a mushy, formless blob he removed recently as an example.
Beauty is such a lucrative industry in Venezuela that the country spawned its own private beauty queen factory - the Miss Venezuela Organization - to train pageant hopefuls on everything from the perfect runway sashay to public speaking, with a price tag of up to $70,000 per contestant.
Richard Linares, a personal trainer for the organization, scoffed at the idea that the PIP scandal would put Venezuelan women off cosmetic surgery that is so popular that some teenage girls receive implants as a birthday present from their parents.
"In Venezuela, plastic surgery is not just a fad. It's a way of life," he said.

WikiLeaks' Assange plans bid for Australian Senate
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to run for a seat in the Australian Senate in elections due next year despite being under virtual house arrest in England and facing sex crime allegations in Sweden, the group said Saturday.
The 40-year-old Australian citizen is fighting extradition to Sweden. He has taken his legal battle all the way to Britain's Supreme Court, which is expected to rule on his case soon.
"We have discovered that it is possible for Julian Assange to run for the Australian Senate while detained. Julian has decided to run," WikiLeaks announced on Twitter.
Assange has criticized Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's center-left government for not standing up for him against the potential threat of his extradition to the United States for prosecution over WikiLeaks' release of hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents.
Australian police have concluded that WikiLeaks and Assange have not broken any Australian laws by publishing the U.S. cables, although Gillard has condemned the action as "grossly irresponsible."
John Wanna, an Australian National University political scientist, said it was possible for Assange to run for a Senate seat if he remains on the Australian electoral roll despite living overseas for several years.
"If he gets on the roll, then he can stand as long as he's solvent and not in jail and not insane," Wanna said.
Being convicted of a crime punishable under Australian law by 12 months or more in prison can disqualify a person from running for the Australian Parliament for the duration of the sentence, even if it is suspended.

LONDON (AP) ? Markets were buoyant Wednesday, a day after a fairly rosy assessment of the U.S. economy from the Federal Reserve boosted confidence about the state of the world's largest economy.
A seeming calm in Europe's debt crisis following Greece's successful bond swap has also fueled the optimism, that's sent many stock indexes around the world up to multi-month highs. U.S. markets are doing even better, trading at levels not seen since the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers in 2008.
The latest bout of optimism was fueled by a more positive tone from the Fed after it kept monetary policy unchanged. It also pledged to keep its key interest rate at super-low levels until late 2014.
News that all but four of 19 major U.S. banks passed a Federal Reserve "stress test" exercise and got the green light to boost dividends and take other steps that will make their stocks more attractive to investors also helped support markets.
"Sentiment remains positive aided by a neutral Fed statement, better U.S. economic data, and U.S. banks passing the Fed's stress test," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital.
"Worries about the Greek debt crisis have diminished in the light of the recent restructuring and investors seem sanguine about potential knock-on effects elsewhere in the eurozone," he added.
The combination of an improving U.S. economic backdrop and a more benign European debt backdrop has helped stocks rally hard Wednesday, a day after the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 13,000 and the broader S&P 500 index breached 1,380, widely considered a key technical level in the markets.
In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.5 percent at 5,983 while Germany's DAX rose 1.3 percent to 7,088. The CAC-40 in France rose 0.8 percent to 3,578.
In the U.S., the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.2 percent at 13,198 while the S&P 500 rose 0.1 percent to 1,397. The last time it closed above the 1,400 mark was in June 2008.
The recent positive U.S. economic news has also benefited the dollar as investors have reined in predictions of another monetary stimulus from the Fed. The euro was trading 0.2 percent lower at $1.3056 while the dollar was 0.8 percent higher at 83.60 yen.
Earlier in Asia, stocks outside of China were mostly higher. Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 1.5 percent to 10,050.52 as the yen continued its retreat from record highs against the dollar. The last time the Nikkei closed above 10,000 was July 27.
But Hong Kong and mainland Chinese shares lost ground, with property developers among the biggest decliners, after Premier Wen Jiabao said government curbs that have started to cool surging housing prices will remain in place.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index slipped 0.2 percent to 21,307.89. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index tumbled 2.6 percent to 2,391.23. The Shenzhen Composite Index plunged 4.1 percent to 969.12.

The owners of the company may now attempt to sell the company in parts, starting with snacks, the Journal reported on its website citing a person familiar with the matter.

Obama welcomes drop in U.S. oil imports amid high gas prices
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, arming himself against election-year attacks on his energy policies amid painfully high gas prices, welcomed a report on Monday showing a one million barrel-per-day decline in U.S. oil imports in 2011.
Obama is stepping up defense of his record amid concern that rising oil prices may lift the price of gasoline at the pump to $5 a gallon in some parts of the country this summer, which could pose a threat to the Democratic president's bid for re-election on November 6.
"Today's high gas prices are a painful reminder that there's much more work to do to free ourselves from our dependence on foreign oil and take control of our energy future," Obama said in a statement on the progress report on energy security. "We have made progress."
The report showed U.S. oil imports declined to 8.4 million barrels a day by the end of 2011 compared with 11 million barrels a day when Obama took office in January 2009.
The White House said his policies were tackling a troubling topic for many Americans. This was underlined by a new Washington Post-ABC poll which showed disapproval of the president's handling of the economy increased to 50 percent, from 46 percent when the survey was taken last month.
Nearly two-thirds of those polled said they did not approve of his handling of the situation with gas prices.
Republicans complain that Obama has hobbled the energy industry with red tape and point to the administration's block on TransCanada Corp's Keystone XL oil pipeline project to support their contention that he is hostage to environmentalists in his political base.
"With this report, the president is celebrating his recipe for four or five dollar gas. Poll after poll shows Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of the president's work on gas prices," said Brendan Buck, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress.
The price of gasoline at the pump has risen more than 12 cents to a national average of $3.81 a gallon in the past two weeks, according to the Lundberg Survey released on Sunday. The highest price, of $4.35/gallon, was recorded in Los Angeles.
Rising gas prices could sap consumer spending and undermine economic confidence, which has been lifted by recent encouraging data that was capped on Friday by a better-than-expected February jobs report.
ELECTION HEADWIND
The economy, slowly recovering from a savage recession in 2008-2009, but still hampered by an unemployment rate of 8.3 percent, is expected to be a decisive factor in whether Obama can manage to hold on to the White House for a second term.
Obama visited election battleground states North Carolina and Virginia last week to promote his message. He will speak at the White House on Monday with local television stations serving swing states, including Colorado, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
Oil prices have been buoyed by improving confidence in the outlook for the U.S. and world economy, as well as heightened concern of fresh military conflict in the Middle East amid warnings from Israel over Iran's nuclear program.
Eager to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, the White House report noted that net oil imports as a share of total U.S. consumption declined from 57 percent in 2008 to 45 percent in 2011, "the lowest level in 16 years."
Obama also has told his administration to look into possible manipulation in the oil market as well as evidence of price gouging at the pump, and has not ruled out tapping the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to ease supply pressures.
"We are monitoring the situation and certainly are willing to use all tools available to address these challenges," a White House official told reporters on a conference call to preview the report.

1.Prepare your skin for summer sun on a tanning bed. Tanning beds are dangerous because of the concentrated UVA rays they emit. These are the same rays you get from the sun that cause premature ageing and skin cancer. Getting a light tan on the sun bed does not protect your skin from further damage, it just means you have already exposed it to harmful rays. Tanning does not produce more melanin in the skin, it just brings it to the surface.
2. Olive Oil will prevent stretch marks from pregnancy. In relaity, there is nothing you can apply to the surface of your skin that will prevent stretch marks from appearing. They are a result of the sub-surface splitting due to the skin expanding beyond its elastic capabilities. Usually the result of pregnancy or excessive weight gain, the best way to prevent stretch marks is through a healthy diet, regular exercise and good hydration.
3. A higher SPF lasts longer in the sun. This is another dangerous myth. The difference in protection offered by an SPF of 15 and one of 40 is only 3%, so a higher SPF does not significantly increase your protection. It does not last longer, because the cream is exactly the same, and sweats or washes off the same no matter what the SPF. It is far more important to remember to apply sunscreen all over your body before you go into the sun, and re-apply it regularly, whether you have been swimming or not.
4. People with dark skin tones don?t need sunscreen. Not only is this hogwash, it is very dangerous. Increased levels of melanin cause darker skin tones. Although darker complexions, such as olive toned Mediterranean or Negro ancestry, results in higher concentrations of melanin, it does not make one impervious to the sun?s harmful UVA and UVB rays. Although the risk for skin cancers from sun exposure is slightly less than someone with a fair complexion, it is still present for those with darker skin tones. All must avail themselves of sunscreen protection prior to exposing themselves to harmful rays.
5. Eating chocolate will give you acne. Acne is not caused by anything you eat. Acne occurs when the dead cells that your skin sheds stick together and block gland openings. This causes a back up of the oils that naturally occur in your skin. Bacteria on the skin react to this and make the condition worse. One type of food is not going to cause acne, but a healthy diet will promote a healthier skin and body.
